The first Catholic Church in Tbilisi was built in 1804. It was the Cathedral of Mother Mary’s Assumption into Heaven in Caputsini Street (as it was called at that time). Russian King Alexander I permitted the Prefect of Capuchini Order, Francesco of Padua to construct a Catholic Church. The Austrian Monarch also contributed 1286 piaster to the construction of the Church.
