Detailed Information

The church of Pitareti stands alone on the river Khram, by a washed-out bridge; built by Tamar’s son Giorgi IV in 1213-22. it’s almost square, with only a porch to the south to spoil its regularity. The plan is cruciform, with three virtually equal apses, a single-bay aisle, and a tall central drum; there are excellent carvings on the eastern facade. The church was surrounded in medieval times by a double wall, with a two storey gitetower added in 1696.
